Chicago’s secret “Black Site” exposed.

On Tuesday, The Guardian’s Spencer Ackerman reported on the “equivalent of a CIA black site” operated by police in Chicago. When computer program analyst Kory Wright opened the story, he told me, “I immediately recognized the building” — because, the Chicago resident says, he was zip-tied to a bench there for hours in an intentionally overheated room without access to water or a bathroom, eventually giving false statements to try and end his ordeal.

A five-year-long campaign by Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which it says is a bid to revive northern Nigeria’s medieval Muslim empires, has become one of the deadliest in the world, with around 10,000 people killed last year.

Hundreds, mostly women and children, have been kidnapped and over 3 million people, among them the girl pictured above resting her head, are internally displaced.

Spike Lee Blast Selma’ Oscar Snubs- Angel/Activist

Screen shot 2015-01-18 at 7.57.02 AM

The coincidence wasn’t lost on either of us. Lee’s films have been on the receiving end of several egregious Academy snubs, from his 1989 classic Do the Right Thing failing to receive a Best Picture nod—the racially problematicDriving Miss Daisy ended up winning that year—to Lee not receiving any nominations for his ambitious biopic Malcolm X, though it later landed on both Roger Ebert’s and Martin Scorsese’s lists of the best movies of the ’90s.

As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The biggest Oscar news Thursday was that the powerful Martin Luther King Jr. biopicSelma managed nominations only for Best Picture and Best Song while being snubbed in all the other major categories, most notably Best Director (Ava DuVernay) and Best Actor (David Oyelowo). Lee, who said Selma and Birdmanwere the two best films he saw last year, seemed annoyed but not surprised. – The Daily Beast

Mario Tama capturing Rio de Janeiro’s daily life’

Mario Tam capturing Rio de Janeiro’s daily life’

Mario Tama, a staff photographer for Getty Images, first caught my eye a few months ago with this disturbing photo above taken in what the caption calls Rio de Janeiro’s “Cracolandia” (Read: “Crackland” or “Dope City”). In addition to the complexity of his layered compositions, the ‘daily life’ photos he’s been filing from Brazil ever since are compeling for their potential to offer a counterpoint to the state and corporate sponsor-sanctioned glossy imagery of the World Cup.
